Oviedo's Cider

These are a series of illustrations I did based on my travels through Spain. I've created three illustrations per city visited.

City 4: Oviedo

While in Oviedo I found out that they are known for their hard cider (now I know why I love the stuff so much! It’s in my blood!) there is a whole street, Calle Gascona, dedicated to cider bars where not only do they serve delicious cider, but also the most spectacularly rich and decadent food I’ve ever had in my entire life. The interesting thing is how they serve the cider. A bartender will come to our table and place a small wooden bucket by your seat. While you’re busy looking down at it trying to figure out what it’s for he whips out a glass, seemingly out of nowhere, and proceeds to pour the cider from the bottle into the glass while holding them as far apart from each other as possible. As expected, this causes quite a bit of splashing, this the bucket, but is also how the bubbles are formed in the drink. They only serve you a little bit at a time so that you can enjoy it while the bubbles are still doing their thing. The first sip is really bitter but then overtime you enjoy it more and more. Truly a one of a kind experience and one that we enjoyed for several hours while chatting with our fellow restaurant goers at La Pigüeña. You could say that this was one off the “bucket” list.
