Yemas de Avila

These are a series of illustrations I did based on my travels through Spain. I've created three illustrations per city visited.

City 2: Avila

Avila has a traditional treat which can be found at bakeries around the village. Known as Yemas de Santa Teresa they pay homage to St Teresa who was born there. (Her relics can actually be found in the convent in the city.) The treats themselves are made with egg yolks, a syrup reduction, lemon juice, and cinnamon, which creates a fairly pastey texture when you chew them. It’s unknown where the treats originated, but some credit the monks of the convent. Either way, it’s a tasty way to experience a part of the city’s history.
