Haptic vision

I once felt that philosophy books didn’t have enough illustrations so I made some of my own. This one was meant to illustrate Alois Riegl’s art theoretical concept of the haptic. It later became one of Gilles Deleuze’s central concepts. To put it as simply as possible, haptic vision is a form of perceiving that follows the logic of touch more than the laws of perspective. The eye almost enters the picture and explores it bit by bit. I can’t find a more fitting description of the process of making images of paper.
