Families Belong Together
The last month has been an emotional roller coaster, both personally and nationally. I accepted a new full time position at Starbucks, a brand & company that I've always respected. What was a fleeting thought and dream quickly became a flicker of hope...an updated resume...long nights of updating my portfolio...and then a reality. I still can't believe it.
It felt surreal yesterday to stand 30 feet away from former CEO, Howard Schultz, who spoke in front of the Global Creative Studio. He came upstairs because we had a parting gift for him (since he's retiring from Starbucks for good). Instead of talking about something basic and corporate, he addressed us by saying that we've still got a lot of work to do. That our country is NOT in a good spot. That what's happening in the southern border for immigrants and their families is NOT normal or ok - it's dehumanizing and heartbreaking. We may sell coffee but it's much more than that. Coffee is the catalyst that brings people together to talk about stuff like this. To find common ground, to find solutions, to get creative, and to uplift the human spirit.
I felt very proud watching him speak and to be a part of a place that tries to do good for the world. Now that I'm a mom myself with an 11-month old, I try to imagine what it's like for those parents who were separated from their children and I can't even go there. It's too hard. I'm so ashamed of where our country is at and want us to end the madness.
