Should options or menus be hidden in a hamburger menu? How much would it affect the discoverability of the options?
------
The “80% rule” makes it very clear on when to hide options inside a hamburger menu or otherwise. If the options fall below the 80% of the regular usage, it is acceptable to hide the options in a hamburger menu. For instance, Instagram. The primary features of the app is for users to browse through photos, give likes and comments to the photos and to follow profiles that you like. Secondary features such as settings, post history, and edit profile features are all hidden in the “gear-shaped icon” on the profile page. With this rule, users can focus their attention on the primary features of the app.
