The Hieroglyphic Amalgamation of Chinese and English

This is one of the poster designs from my final project for my foundation year in art & design at UAL.

My project, titled The Hieroglyphic Amalgamation of Chinese and English, explores the possible futures of linguistics. Specifically, looking at the phonetics of English and adopting Pinyin, which is the romanized spelling of Chinese characters and words, to establish a new semantic medium that allows for the coexistence of Chinese and English under a cohesive language system.

In Chinese, there are four different tones and accents to differentiate meanings. With that, I’ve taken the pinyin of specific Chinese words and combined them together to produce what phonetically sounded the most similar to each English word.

I've created a campaign series in which the basis of each poster design uses a word that corresponds to "communication" – the ways in which people engage and exchange information with one another. Henceforth, the purpose of this project is that each poster acts as an interactive medium to provoke engagement between Chinese and English speaking individuals.
