Compressed Drum Soundwave Illustration

Trends come and go, but the way that drums are being produced right now bring about something fairly specific in my mind. If you refer to my illustration, I’m trying to point out not only the idea of compression as a production technique, but also how the big, bombastic drum sounds of yesterday have fallen out of style. Whether the sound is fat and warm or tight and brittle (even within the context of drum machines/drum programming), it’s that organic, punchy sound that is seemingly everywhere. I find this interesting, so I took these thoughts in my head and made a little something out of it.

For the record:
While one could view this production style as something that‘d possibly be considered trendy right now, one could also note a further obsession with ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’ stylings within many diverse artistic mediums these days. Either way, I genuinely enjoy a lot of stuff that would fall under this umbrella, so I made a Spotify playlist of examples like this that I’m into: https://open.spotify.com/user/1216544056/playlist/3PLX4oKHgtRpAFIdHIxKaq?si=I4CjBSqPQRq9Uhx2y2basw
