Koinobori Enamel Pin Design

Last year, I traveled to Japan and learned about the history of "Children's Day". "Koi" or carps signify spirit and vigor so carp streamers would be hung during this national holiday to honor and wish children good health and strength. Originally, the national holiday was celebrated to honor only sons. But eventually, it was changed to honor all children, regardless of gender.

I created this design to have a yin-and-yang, equality element to it to commend the evolution of the holiday in an effort to include everyone.
