Evaline Onboarding
This is a shot from the last project I worked on at Evaline, our public electric vehicle (EV) charger discovery app.
Onboarding here was a necessary roadblock—so much of the in-app experience (charger and network compatibility, charge time estimates, etc.) absolutely relied on vehicle specific data to be useful.
The challenge here was that A) there's a ton of electric vehicles on the market, all very different, B) even those vehicles differ from year to year, trim package to trim package, and C) if onboarding was too long, or people felt uncomfortable with it, we'd never make it to the actual app.
Vehicle selection
This was my favorite part of onboarding. We saved users time over existing process, and there were some cool technical tricks we used to make it extra useful.
All of our competitors had a flow that looked like:
1. Choose a manufacturer
2. Choose a model
3. Enter a year
Rather than replicate what already existed (a tedious, scroll intensive process), we went with a text-entry field. The field sorted by both best match, and our understanding of sales figures (if a vehicle had greater market share, it got bumped up in the results), to surface a ton of data about a vehicle very quickly for users.
