Sight and Self

Do you feel beautiful?

The answer to that should be a resounding "YES!" but we know it isn't that simple. Sometimes it depends on the day and how we are feeling in general. Usually, we can overcome this feeling by seeing ourselves in the mirror in a flattering light, or with a great hat or outfit on, when we're exercising and we see the color flush our cheeks, anything that makes us feel beautiful in our own eyes. All visual input.

But what if you cannot see?

You rely on your friends and family to tell you: your hair looks fine, your makeup is okay, your outfit fits you well, etc. But when you are visually impaired, that can be very frustrating. That means you put a great deal of your body image and self image in the hands of others. Sure, you will ask for council from people you trust, but trust does not take into account differences in taste.

It also means when people are constantly complementing one thing about you, like how beautiful your hair is, you can feel too scared to cut your hair and "ruin" the one thing people always laud you on.
