Better late than never right?! Had too much fun working on this comp for the SPACEDchallenge.
@Dann Petty has always been an amazing curator for the creative community and this project has obviously made an impact on a large majority over the past couple weeks.
From the minute I watched the creative brief, there were a million ideas and different directions that I wanted to take this. As I watched all of the rad submissions rolling in I couldn't wait to get started. I noticed that a majority of the concepts were going dark so I decided to take the high contrast dark / storm trooper white route taking advantage of a loud red accent color.
The vibe of this site was highly influenced by my first trip to Hawaii a couple of weeks ago. My ideal vacation is one where you get back home needing a vacation from your vacation. I love experiencing and exploring new places and leaving with memories that I will never forget. I wouldn't want to go all the way to SPACE to sit on a black sand crater beach and sip on a cocktail in my space suit. I would want to get out there and explore every inch of that new place that is 100% new to the majority of the population.
I've followed Benjamin Hardman on Instagram for a long time now and I've always been a huge fan of the way his images of Iceland make it feel like a different planet. 99% of the images used throughout this comp were sourced from Benjamin's Instagram account. Using real images helped me connect the content of this site to an actual location instead of focusing on the "space" or space travel itself.
I wanted to push the layout of this page to compliment the organic / raw thought of traveling to a destination like the moon, while also keeping the user experience in the front of my mind. High contrast and storm trooper white stuck out to me from a design standpoint of the creative brief. With all of the dark / white contrast I wanted to make sure that the accent color really stood out and captured the attention of the user.
Damn this one was fun. Full Pixels Attacked.
