Sci-Fi UI #6 - Gerty

Moon is my favourite Science Fiction film of all time. It’s the directorial debut of Duncan Jones, and whilst looking for information about Gerty, I stumbled upon the blog of Gavin Rothery who worked as the concept artist for Moon. Its a really fascinating read, where you really feel the time and budget constraints of making the film. Interesting for Gerty was that the original builds were made of simple vacuum formed plastic with an electronic photo frame used as the screen, where Gavin would switch the SD cards out to change the faces. Gavin also mentions that originally Duncan wanted Gerty’s face to be made from ASCII but Gavin convinced him to use emoticons instead, as it would be easier to read. This is for the best, but its a shame we never saw Gerty perform a table flip.
