YONDER/Assay
II
The second tale speaks of the Wolves. These creatures have always been part of Yonder, lurking in the shadows. Those few who managed to get a glimpse of them found themselves oddly unable to recall the encounter. Hence, the Wolves were shrouded in mystery, with rumors and tall tales galore.
It was said that the Wolves inhabited the Southern forests at the foothills of the mountains; but their ominous presence was felt everywhere. At times, even in the far North, whole settlements vanished overnight. Thick fog covered the ground, and the next morning all that was left of the bustling streets was a desolate ruin. Only whispers followed in their wake. Whispers of the fiery eyes. Of a great wolf who drowned in the river of flame and rose again as the Overlord. Of a wolf able to eclipse the moon and devour the sun itself.
When the Restless came, everything changed. To put an end to terror, they made a secret pact with the Wolves. Many skeptics believed it to be a sham, claiming that the Wolves had been long dead and the clan spread false rumors to increase their influence. But some thought otherwise. There were stories of the dark silhouettes in the night, missing children, and the terrible price that the Restless paid for their power.
One way or another, Wolves have not attacked humans for many years, and the peaceful folk couldn’t be happier. Secretive as they were, the Restless set the world on a path of progress and prosperity.
Meanwhile, after leaving the forest, the Boy catches a ride with a clan advisor, who is traveling in his mechanical carriage on a secret mission. The Restless drops him off at the crossroads, by the brewers’ village, where his rabbits are snatched away from him. In pursuit of thieves, the Boy ends up on a ship graveyard. There he must face new challenges and uncover old mysteries.
