Drunk Sailor Stippling Pack for Illustrator

Drunk Sailor Stippling Brushes

We're releasing a new pack of Illustrator stippling brushes Tuesday.

As we were researching stippling work we came across the insanely beautiful work of Sailor Jerry (born Norman Collins).

Jerry learning the tattoo style called the hand-pricking method from a guy named "Big Mike" hopping freight trains.

Later he learned to use a tattoo machine in Chicago from Tats Thomas.

After WWII he corresponded with Japanese tattoo artists (at that time the most sophisticated tattoo artists in the world) and learned their secrets for shading, tone, and texture.

Jerry was also a skipper of a three-masted schooner, a poet, a radio DJ, a self-taught electrician, and an avid motorcycle rider.

Inspired by Jerry we put tons of effort into making these stippling brushes amazing. Each stippling brush was created from real stipple samples we made.

They work with a mouse, Astropad, Apple Pencil, and are a dream with pressure sensitivity.

And, of course, you can use them for all sorts of design and illustration work. Not just tattoo styles. We just happened to play with this theme because it's fun and novel to build the pack around a theme.

Every day until launch we'll be releasing a new little animation of the pack in action.

Can't wait to share the entire pack with you on Tuesday!
