Google Play Music - 90's Throwback
I'm catching up with some work I did earlier in the year. This was my second or third assignment as illustrator for Google Play Music. I've always kind of taken the 90's aesthetic for granted, but when I was researching I realized a lot of what I think of "Saved by The Bell" patterns are all based on the designs of the Memphis Group, this Italian architecture and design house that was producing this whole vocabulary of colors and shapes in the 80's, and then finally had their moment in the culture a decade later. (Old news to anyone who was paying attention in art history class no doubt, but definitely news to me!)
Sidenote: This gig has been the first time I've really had to fully dive in to learning illustrator. (I've always done my vector work in flash.) Shading the discman took a lot longer than it should have (and probably 3 hours of different online tutorials.) I still go back to Flash for handdrawn elements, but I'm definitely coming around to the awesomeness of illustrator. (Not that anybody on here likely needs any convincing.)
