Amsterdam - With more than 400 kilometres of bicycle paths criss-crossing the city, this Dutch capital is not only famous for its naughty girls and herbal brownies, but regularly dominates the lists of the world’s most cycle-friendly cities. There are over 800,000 bicycles in Amsterdam, which estimates to more bikes than people. This world-class investment in cycling infrastructure began in the 1970’s, when the people of Amsterdam took to the streets in protest against the unacceptably high death rates for cyclists on the roads following a post-war boom in auto reliance. In 1971 alone, more than 3,000 people were killed by cars, 450 of them were children. So when you roam the streets and canals today, you can clearly see this 40 years of heritage scooting by every second.
