Cape Town
Also referred to as the 'Mother City’, this port city on South Africa’s southwest coast need not much introduction, being the top choice of most world travellers, coffee connoisseurs and nature lovers. Other than the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela (which is now a living museum on Robin Island) there’s the “Kaapse Klopse”, is a minstrel festival that takes place annually on 2 January, where as many as 13,000 minstrels take to the streets garbed in bright colours either carrying colourful umbrellas or playing an array of musical instruments. People consider the festival a rite of renewal that has been shaped by the Cape’s slave history.
