So this was the really cool about the present, imo. Without giving away personal details, the ampersand and the origin "and per se and" (meaning ‘and (i.e. &) by itself makes the word and’) have special meaning to his wife and what she teaches. I was also asked to very subtly incorporate her initials in the symbol, so if you look close enough you can see the L and the A.
