Livin' In Sin With A Safety Pin, Cleveland Rocks

This may be one of my favorite projects to date.

I was driving from home to my studio space in downtown Columbus when I by chance decided to take Cleveland Avenue downtown instead of the interstate like I usually do.

While I was driving down, I saw this old brick apartment building with an old sign outside reading "Cleveland Plaza". For some reason I was captivated by that sign and when I got to my studio, I googled the plaza and found an image of the sign online (attached).

I spent the rest of the day building this completely custom typeface for the city with the image as a reference. I wanted the face to evoke both the industry and elegance of the scrappy city of Cleveland and I really think it does.

I wanted to share my process with you to illustrate the fact that inspiration can come from anywhere, even a chance alternate route to work. Always be on the lookout for it because you never know where it may strike.
