Passion to Paid
In 2012, I started a little lettering project called Daily Dishonesty for fun. I was 22 years old. It cost me less than $10 to start. It was supposed to be an inside joke for me and my friends.
Little did I know that it would get passed around the internet like crazy, fill my inbox with freelance work requests, and land me a five-figure book deal - all before I graduated college.
"Okay," I thought to myself, "maybe that was just luck."
So in 2013, I launched another passion project, Ex Boyfriend Tears, in response to a bad break up. I posted it to Tumblr. NY Times best-selling author John Green caught wind of it and reposted it to his blog, which generated hundreds of sales. Nasty Gal even placed a wholesale order with me!
In 2014, I launched the Will Letter for Lunch project, where I offered to do restaurant chalkboard menus in exchange for the exact food items I wrote on the boards. The project got me featured on Grub Street, BuzzFeed, and even the local FOX 5 / Fox5NY.com news. And within one year of starting the project, I had clients like Microsoft, Samuel Adams, and The Culinary Institute of America in my portfolio.
"Hmm...maybe there's something to these passion projects after all," I mused. Once I was aware of the power of these projects, I've been using them as my creative secret weapon ever since.
Creative passion projects have been THE heart and soul of my business for the past four years. Not only do they keep me creatively satisfied, they consistently get eyes on my work and clients knocking on my door.
If you're an artist, designer, writer, or any other creative who's interested in starting a passion project but don't know where to begin, I'm here to help.
