Na Kupuna Ukulele Club Logo

My grandmother, Toshiko “Daisy” Okura was one of the founders of the Na Kupuna Ukulele Club of Chicago. For years she and the other performers brought a taste of the islands to the city of Chicago and beyond. The club is still around today, but sadly, my grandma passed away. As tribute and in memory of her, my friend/design partner and I decided to show our support to the club by designing them a logo, tshirt, and website.

I wanted the logo to be authentic—to the club and to the Hawaiian culture. I took inspiration from my grandfather, Hiroshi “Johnny” Okura, who had designed all of the clubs decor and signage by hand. I traced his lettering and put together this logo, creating a custom font through the hands of my grandpa.
