Logo concept (feedback please?)

This is a logo I'm working on for my boyfriend, who's currently studying web design. He wanted something strong, minimal, and making use of his initials. The dark wood is the background he'll be using for his site.

I feel this isn't quite "there" yet, so I'd really appreciate feedback and suggestions!
