042/100: Marsha P. Johnson

American drag queen, sex worker and gay liberation activist. She became a leader in the gay liberation movement when she lead the Stonewall Riots in the 60’s. Later, she became part of ACT UP and co-founded STAR to provide housing and resources for trans women and LGBTQ teens in NYC. She was even photographed by Andy Warhol as part of his ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ series. Throughout her life she struggled with her gender identity and coped with drug addiction. In July 1992, shortly after the 1992 Pride March, Johnson's body was found floating in the Hudson River. It was ruled a suicide but those close to her insisted that she was not suicidal and witnesses claimed they saw ‘thugs’ harassing her on the night of her death. Today she is still celebrated for her activism and her role in the LGBTQ community.
