The Black Barbershop

The Black Barbershop is a collection of photographs that documents the interactions between the barber and customer. Each barbershop is predominantly owned and supported by African Americans. The barbershops visited in this documentary are found throughout the Bay Area.

For Black men, the barbershop is not just a place where you receive a hair cut or a beard trim. Historically, the barbershop has been a safe haven for Black men. It's a place where we can go for friendship, solidarity and solace. It's a place where we can escape to without judgment. It's a place of loyalty and trust. It's where we can fearlessly be ourselves.
