Ayyanar is a Hindu village god of Tamil Nadu also worshipped by Sri Lankan Tamils. He is primarily worshipped as a guardian deity who protects the rural villages. The temples of Ayyanar are usually flanked by gigantic and colourful statues of him and his companions riding horses or elephants. The Tamil word Ayyānar is derived from the root word Aiyā which is a title often used by Tamils, Malayalis and Telugus to designate respectable people.

ஐயனார் அல்லது அய்யனார் ஒரு நாட்டுப்புறக் காவல் தெய்வம். பழங்காலம் தொட்டே ஐயனார் வழிபாடு தமிழர் இடையே இருந்து வருகிறது. குறிப்பாக மதுரையிலும் சுற்றியுள்ள சிற்றூர்களிலும் இது தொன்றுதொட்டு இருந்து வருகிறது. ஐயனார் வழிபாட்டைச் சிறுதெய்வ வழிபாடு என்று சமய ஆய்வாளர் குறிப்பிடுவதுண்டு.
