Last but not the least, despite the cultural differences one dessert that is common in every household is Kheer, a rice pudding, made by boiling rice, broken wheat, tapioca or vermicelli with milk and sugar; it is flavored with cardamom, raisins, saffron, cashews, pistachios or almonds. With different names like payasam, Khiri, phirni, payesh or pays, the name is derived from a Sanskrit word 'ksheer' means milk.
