G is for the Genuine Cuban Giants

The Cuban Giants were the first African-American professional baseball club. Formed at a New York resort in 1885, the team challenged many amateur teams, attracting great attention. Though the team rarely included any players of Cuban descent, the team was given the moniker “Cuban Giants” as an appeal to a larger audience. In 1896 the team would experience copycats, leading ownership to take up the name Genuine Cuban Giants.
