Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, is a dreamlike novel that follows two different stories. The chapters alternate between “Hard-Boiled Wonderland,” a modern cyberpunk-like science fiction story, and “The End of the World,” a surreal timeless story. Because of the two different styles, each story has its own illustration style. The cover illustration brings the two styles together by depicting a scene where the two stories come together.
