Graph Filtering
We initially placed the labels for this line graph in a traditional legend off to the side, with some checkboxes to toggle lines on and off. But that was not only disconnected by proximity (and so difficult to track the eye back and forth between label and line), but was cumbersome to quickly view individual lines.
So we put the labels right at the end of the labels. We had to spread them out so they don't overlap, like the lines do, so then it became even more important to be able to isolate individual lines. So the easiest way to do that was just by hovering.
And because this whole graph is also a slider that you can drag with your mouse, the hover-interaction would be stumbled upon naturally.
