A Dark & Stormy Night 2017: Icon Background

Big Class is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating and supporting the voices of New Orleans' writers ages 6-18 through creative collaborations with schools and communities.

Big Class is participating in the 826 National Chapter Development Process, with plans to open The Haunting Supply Co.—a store for ghosts—in New Orleans.

For its third year, Big Class wanted to revisit the branding and logo for the event to lighten it up a bit. Since I design for them on a volunteer basis, sometimes members of their staff need to create something quickly to solicit donations, publicize a smaller event, etc. so it was important for me to design something that could be easily broken up, re-used, and had a "componentized" look and feel that would be easy for non-designers to leverage.

Here I've created a background using some icons from the Noun Project and some I created myself. Leveraging the Noun Project means it will be easy to add icons of a similar style in the future as new needs arise, and icons can be used in isolation with the logo or type treatments to emphasize or call out a particular part of the event. They'll also be easy to refresh year after year with colorized treatments, additions, and other small tweaks.
