Brandon Mill Community Identity
Greenville, SC was the textile capital of the world for years, with more than a dozen massive cotton mills. I’m typing this from the Brandon Mill (which has been resurrected as loft apartments) which was planned in 1899, built in 1900, and opened for business in January of 1901. By 1906, the mill’s work force grew to 420 employees, and the village to more than 400 homes. By 1918 it sponsored a school, church, nursery, community house, and library.
I’ve been working with my neighborhood association for the last year or so to establish an iconic identity for our storied little mill village, home to Shoeless Joe Jackson and countless other hard-working folks.
Now, on to yard signs, email templates, gateway signage, and — fingers crossed as we work with the county and Historical Society — street signs.
