Car Dashboard Concept

Traditional speed gauges are outdated and dangerous!? Instead of dragging skeuomorphic notions into the digital realm, a new approach to speed display UX is required. Mechanical speedometer shows current speed as a percentage of maximum vehicle speed. This may impede user's ability to evaluate road situation, urge them to test the limits of the machine, and frequently leads to speeding infractions and, unfortunately, traffic accidents. What if instead we display speed as a percentage of current speed limit? Leveraging sensor data, system determines and displays current speed limit to the left of the main speed gauge. Current speed is thus rendered as a percentage of the limit. When the limit is exceeded, user gets visual feedback and warning message urging them to drop the speed below current limit. Toward-away orientation of speed indicator supports the messaging. Interface provides a clear incentive to follow the rules of the road and stay within the safe boundaries.
