Dial (first attempt)

Following @Matt Gentile's tutorial for a control dial went really well up until the last step. I followed the step exactly, and I even re-tried it, and I still can't get it to turn out. Any suggestions?

EDIT: After messing with it for a bit, I found that I get the best result just ignoring the instruction to change the scratch layer to 80% opacity.
