Marilyn The Divine

Figurative Abstract Symbolism
Mixed media collage on cardboard
Gold covered wooden frame under glass
28 x 34 x 2" // 12lbs

On June 21st, 1962, Bert Stern took the last studio portraits of Marilyn Monroe. That was six weeks before her tragic death. This collage features one of Stern's photos of the icon. Marilyn was a provocative, scandalous, and controversial sex symbol, the very epitome of desire in her era. 55 years later and the public's perception has changed of her tremendously. I've depicted the sex symbol as a holy figure with a cosmic halo holding the bible, in a vibrant world filled with a butterfly made of graffiti, dueling unicorns (as symbols of light and darkness), and timeless imagery bringing the mind right back to a simpler time.
