Barbaro Garbey

Today's birthday is Barbaro Garbey. He was a role player on the 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers team. I mostly remember his name. I was 8 in 1984. I was a Tigers fan, who had just moved to Chicago. I was hoping for a Tigers v. Cubs - but that didn't happen.

As I was preparing this illustration I read Garbey's SABR bio page (http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/a7b39deb) and learned that he was the first Cuban born MLB player since Castro closed the borders for ball players. So he helped pave the way for current players like Yoenis Cespedes, Aroldis Chapman and other Cuban born players.
