Frederiksborg Slot

Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød.

Construction started in 1560 by King Frederik the 2nd, in the place of the manor Hillerødsholm, which dated back to 1275. Most of it was torn down by his son, Christian the 4th, who rebuilt it in Dutch renaissance style. Much of the castle was destroyed in a fire in december 1859, but was restored over the following 25 years. The royal church survived the fire, though, and still stands in its original form. It now serves as museum and church.
