Widely regarded as one of the most successful Pharaohs, Hatshepsut is referred to as "the first great woman of history" in the records (from around 1500 BCE). She was one of the most prolific builders and created many trade routes. Statues and any memory of her depicted her as male—at her request—so she was largely unknown by scholars until the 19th century.
