Poth's Beer T-Shirt Design

A t-shirt design that I created for Shibe Vintage Sports (Philadelphia, PA) as part of their "Landmark" line of tees.

Ever popped into a Philly bar and ordered a Lager? You can thank Frederic A. Poth for the popularity of the drink!

Poth was a German immigrant who started his brewery in the 1860s at the corner of 31st and Jefferson St. in North Philadelphia (the brewery itself is still standing, though currently abandoned). While Philadelphia, and America in general, stuck to Ale or Whiskey at the time, Poth helped bring Lager into bars across the country.

The brewery was one of the largest in Philadelphia and Frederic was a millionaire. His family took over the brewery when he died in 1905, and it continued to be one of the most successful in Philadelphia until Prohibition. The brewery was one of only a few that made it through Prohibition intact, but they were never able to regain their momentum, and were out of business by the early 1940s.
