Part of a Today in History series. August 6, 1945: An American B-29 bomber dropped the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb destroyed 90 percent of the city and killed 80,000 people in an instant. A little over a week later, Emperor Hirohito surrendered to Allied forces.
