My England Starting XI

The BBC Sport team created a team selector as a key interactive part of their editorial content for Euro 2016, allowing fans to pick and share their starting XIs. The first selector went live when England coach Roy Hodgson named his provisional 26-man squad for the tournament. By the time of England’s opening game against Russia more than one million users had picked their teams. They could choose from the entire squad and slot them into a variety of different formations. Where to play Wayne Rooney? Who to start up front? Harry Kane? Jamie Vardy?

Fans are able to share their selections across various social networks to generate discussion and debate among friends. The editorial team has been able to mine the data to determine the most popular picks and formations – these have then been used across TV match coverage and within editorial content on the BBC Sport site.

Since the first launch, there have been various team selectors created for the home nations teams in France, to determine the best players in the group stage and for the final of the FA Cup.
