Edge Of The Jungle

Misty jungle heat and red dirt where we meet a dense and unforgiving landscape.

Across the road from where we lived in Borneo – many years ago – was a sloped wall of bright red dirt. It was where the construction workers had carved away the flat space to build the homes in our cul de sac. Some guest workers had a hut at the top. At the end of the day you could sometimes here them gathered in a group outside for their evening meal. Beyond the hut the vegetation was already reclaiming the next slope up. And at the top of the hill was the beginning of the impenetrable line of jungle trees. The sky above was thick from the haze blown in from the clearing fires that plagued that year. The sun still managing to pierce through throwing a red glow over the West. Misty jungle heat and red dirt where we meet a dense and unforgiving landscape.

When I found out I was leaving Borneo I took one of the empty canvases outside to the patio and did this oil painting quite quickly. I think it captures the damp heat and liveliness of the landscape. It is my wife’s favourite picture and now hangs in our living room. Enjoy 😃
