Instagram Night Mode?
I’m not going to talk about the design changes but rather a problem I had last night while browsing on Instagram. The monochrome interface makes perfect sense, especially for a content heavy app like Instagram, however making the app all white creates a problem for me during night. If I’m looking at pictures I would like to view them on brightness turned up and when the interface is all white it’s like holding a torch to your face. After a while this starts to get annoying because there is too much light, so I’m suggesting a night mode that is easier on the eye (during night) and I believe this also allows the content to shine just like the original interface.
One way to integrate this into the app is the way Tweetbot approaches day/night mode. Instead of yet another UI element or some kind of complicated time-aware logic, they have a simple three-finger swipe gesture that triggers the switch between day and night modes, with a delightful transition animation.
It's simple details like this that makes an app both beautiful AND accessible.
