Slugs with Wigs poster/handbill/flyer (print) design mockup

My client was looking to re-brand his logo, specifically in regards to the new Soundcloud profile layout. He asked for something that would fit within the confines of a circle and yet be versatile. His music style style varies, from House, Indie, slow beats, to funk (whatever takes his fancy), He adds a lot of spoken word samples to add interest. He also wanted a postcard design to circulate in order to generate more interest. He mentioned that he liked a vintage/retro visual style and the idea of a character design featuring two slugs. Likewise, the flyer idea might look like the back of a vintage book. He sent me a few samples of textures and styles he liked as well as a hand-drawn sketch illustrating having icons such as a ghetto blaster, or cassette, or vinyl record that could be faded in background. Then different graphics could be used to differentiate different mixes. For the postcard, he thought a Polaroid picture might be an interesting element.

I designed the logo and brand elements in Adobe Illustrator. I started with the faded color palettes of off-white, green and blue. Then I chose a bold and stylish retro inspired script typeface suitable for logo, poster, branding, packaging and t-shirt design. It looks like 1960s and 70s fashion and sport related typeface, unique and fun at the same time. Then I started the character design of the slugs. I began with the bigger one with a focus on vintage cartoon and illustration style that would carry over into vector design with that same timeless quality. I was inspired by the simple shapes of characters like Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop, Mighty Mouse, and Felix the Cat. Then I created a vector boombox and recreated the sketch with a gritty pulp fiction style of time that still kept the retro feel while adding a bit of street urbanity. I topped the graphics off with some vector and paper distressed textures to really pile on that feel of a paperback novel you loved so much you read a thousand times. For the postcards, I took these elements and applied them as we had discussed. One side is an old Polaroid photograph and the other reads like the back of a pulp detective book.
