Thousands Cheer • 1943 • Movie Title

Here’s the title card I’ve created for the next film in Judy Garland’s filmography, “Thousands Cheer.” It’s a simple story about a wartime romance between a soldier (played by Gene Kelly) and a colonel’s daughter (played by Kathryn Grayson), with an army camp concert as a grand diversion. It was produced at the height of the Second World War and was intended as a morale booster for American troops and their families. The studio saturated the film with cameos, specialty numbers, and songs by some of the biggest stars on the MGM lot.

Judy only appears in the finale, singing “The Joint is Really Jumpin’ Down at Carnegie Hall,” as herself, but it’s the first time we see her in color since “The Wizard of Oz” so it’s an important film historically and for Garland fans as well.
