UNIQ 3.0 FINDER REPLACEMENT ICON

main preview

So it's been 9 years since I made a replacement icon, and I sort of hate it to be honest haha

I'll try to explain below my thought process and what I would like to do with this down the line

comparison of all the uniq finder icons

The first icon was done in 2009, the second in 2016, and the now the new version in 2025

Over the years icon design and custom replacement icons took a weird turn in some timeline, and it killed ( at least for me ) the need to make cool custom icons for your devices and OS's

With the push for the iOS rounded framing I feel like we lost so much creative freedom, we already had a lot of constraints with the square frame, the small sizes, but we made it work. And we could have multiple types of styles and they all could sit next to each other no problem, now in todays age a small % of people will understand what I'm talking about which is the sad part

sketch - render

What I'm trying to accomplish here is sort of simple, but at the same time a bit complex, I want to try and do a set of icons that sort of breaks that mould even a little if possible, hence these blobs or lumpy parts that are sort of escaping towards the edges of the icon. But I still want to retain what the UNIQ icon was all about originally, the layers and the curves, so the angle now is frontal but hopefully with the proper shading I can still try to make them look like they bend backwards

( still wip )

Where the base rounded rectangle is just by a small % offset from the edges where the transparent png can still help in retaining that basic shape, but still add some variety to it, like these lumpy parts going off the edge

without the lumpy parts

So I'm not happy just yet with how I approached the lumpy parts, this was the first try for now

Since the entire icon was made just in Figma, I've been experimenting with a component system for individual and custom lumpy parts where I can have them all be done as a grayscale base, and with masking and adjustment layers, variables etc I could easily then colour them from icon to icon and give myself a lot of control for global tweaks across the entire icon set

all sizes

The obvious issue here is scaling of the lumps, but with components etc I have so much control over these little global changes basically from each individual lump shading, it's highlights, new variants with different options, and a cool system where while I'm designing I can still have that creative control over the entire thing

So no release just yet, since I'm not happy with it but hopefully I could get some feedback like in the good old days of dribbble and maybe find something even better in the process

So the main question is, would you like to see a full set with this type of theme, and would you pay for the figma file / system with each and every icon where you can tweak shit and make it your own with a couple of clicks?

There would ofc be a free version with no customizable options duh :D

lemme know thanks
