Graduate Medical Education

Carilion Clinic and VTC School of Medicine

The Graduate Medical Education (GME) program at Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech School of Medicine was originally housed on the main Carilion Clinic website. The individual residencies and fellowships had their own microsites, many of them on Wiix or on separate domains. We were tasked with bringing all of the individual websites under one platform to capitalize on the SEO power of having all of their content in one place. This consolidation will make it easier to recruit prospective students from across the country and beyond by having 1 single source of truth to use for any type of targeted advertising.

Another challenge that the GME team faced was the disjointed approach to content management. One service line might have been running Wiix while another might have been relying on the rigid templates on the main Carilion Clinic website. On the back-end, we were tasked with making the experience for site admins more seamless and fluid so that they could create content on the fly and publish at will. We used Drupal with a custom admin theme called Gin to accomplish this. Within Drupal, we created a series of special templated blocks that could serve different purposes (for example, a Contact Us block or a block with Accordions for content).

My Role:

• Project Lead

• Requirements Gathering

• UI/UX Design and Development

• Drupal theming/CSS/HTML/Twig

• End User Training & Documentation

Below is an example of a Residency page. The template had to be flexible and allow site admins to move the large blocks and components around however they wanted but still be semantically correct from accessibility and SEO standpoints. Many of the components were designed to have a call to action to get site visitors to apply or contact someone.

Key Takeaways

This website was a fun challenge and stretched us in new ways and hope to continue to evolve and iterate on this project as new needs arise.
