BE NEW – Sustainable Soap Packaging
A Natural Solution for Sustainable Packaging
Every year, 7 million tonnes of shells from the fishing and aquaculture industry are discarded, with most ending up in landfills or polluting shorelines. While some are repurposed as fertilizer, shells contain over 90% calcium carbonate, making them a valuable biomaterial with the potential to replace less sustainable materials like plastic.
For this project, I designed an eco-friendly soap package using discarded shells as the primary material. The lid design was inspired by the natural form of a seashell and was created as a 3D model, bringing both functionality and aesthetic value to the final product. After use, the lid can be repurposed as a soap stand, further extending its sustainability.
The brand name ‘BE NEW’ is a play on the Korean word for ‘soap’ (비누/binu) while also symbolising the creation of new value from discarded ecological resources.
By repurposing waste into biodegradable, plastic-free packaging, this project tackles waste and pollution from both the seafood and packaging industries.
