Taxi button - Old Casio watch
Task
Design a ‘Take Order’ button for the driver side of a taxi app in the style of vintage Casio watches.
Research
I explored Casio watches from the 1980s and 1990s, focusing on models with buttons. I was searching for an unusual button with distinct features.
I filtered out the ones with the coolest buttons.
Sketches
I sketched a bunch of low-fi ideas for the button to visualize its look and feel. As I progressed, I got a clearer understanding of the key elements it should include—like indentations, text positioning, and small bulges.
I finally decided on a volumetric rectangular shape with a deep indentation in the center and narrower ones from the sides. For the text, I went with the classic two-line layout, just like the buttons on Casio watches with a calculator.
Final design
In my view, the button should be so appealing that it makes you want to lick it. That’s why I chose a bold contrast—violet for the button and yellow for the main text.
I also added a couple of overlays in saturation mode and a subtle noise texture to enhance the look.
