Taxi button - Harry Potter
Task
Create a 'Pay for the Taxi' button, but set it in the Harry Potter universe.
Research
I explored graphic design examples from the original Harry Potter movies and came across MinaLima—the designer behind many of the iconic assets. I also dove into the logic behind transactions and transportation in the wizarding world.
I imagined the Ford Anglia from the second movie as the go-to taxi cab in the wizarding world. To pay for the ride, you’d use Galleons, Sickles, or Knuts.
Sketches
I started by wireframing and defining the size and content of the button. I imagined it could be used in an iPhone app, so it needed to be clear, visually appealing, and designed to create a strong desire to tap on it.
By the way, since it’s set in the English wizarding world, I used 'journey' instead of 'trip'—the more British term compared to the American variant.
I went through multiple iterations to refine the design. Initially, the button featured a straight top and a sharply beveled bottom. Eventually, I realized it looked more like a frame than a button, so on the final button I reduced the shadows inside and applied light gradients to give it a more rounded, button-like appearance.
I considered adding decorative elements, such as ornaments or even a Ford Anglia inside the button. However, I ultimately decided to remove them to keep the design clean, modern, and functional.
Final design
Towards the end, I realized I had to choose between two distinct elements: a Harry Potter-style font or an image of the Ford. I decided to go with the font, as it’s more recognizable to Potter fans, especially because of the distinctive “P” with its sharp lightning bolt styling.
