Smart Dustbin Using Quarky and Buzer

Overview

We have developed a Smart Dustbin system using PictoBlox and Quarky. This innovative setup includes two separate dustbin boxes, each equipped with a buzzer, and utilizes a webcam for detecting the type of waste. The system aids in proper waste segregation by identifying biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and guiding users on where to dispose of it.

Components Used

  • Quarky: The central microcontroller responsible for controlling the lights and buzzers.

  • PictoBlox: The programming environment used for developing the waste detection logic.

  • Webcam: Used to detect and differentiate between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

  • Dustbin Boxes: Two separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

  • Buzzers: Attached to each dustbin to alert users about the correct bin for the detected waste type.

Functionality

  1. Waste Detection: The webcam captures the image of the waste and uses PictoBlox to process the image and determine the type of waste.

  2. Biodegradable Waste:

    • Quarky displays a green light.

    • The buzzer for the biodegradable bin is activated.

  3. Non-Biodegradable Waste:

    • Quarky displays a red light.

    • The buzzer for the non-biodegradable bin is activated.

User Interaction

To promote physical activity and avoid laziness, we decided not to use servo motors for opening the dustbin lids. Instead, users need to manually open the bins using their hands or feet. This design encourages a bit of movement while disposing of waste correctly.

Benefits

  • Proper Waste Management: The system ensures that waste is correctly segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories.

  • Physical Activity: By requiring users to manually open the bins, the system promotes a small amount of physical exercise, contributing to an active lifestyle.

  • Interactive Experience: The use of lights and buzzers provides immediate feedback to users, making the waste disposal process interactive and engaging.

Future Enhancements

  • Advanced Waste Detection: Integration of AI models for more accurate waste type recognition.

  • Data Logging: Keeping track of the types and amounts of waste segregated for analytical purposes.

  • Community Engagement: Encouraging the adoption of similar systems in schools and public spaces to promote better waste management practices.

Conclusion

The Smart Dustbin system is a practical and interactive solution for waste segregation, combining technology with physical activity to encourage proper waste disposal habits. It provides an efficient way to manage waste while promoting user engagement and an active lifestyle.ext here...
